Tour Zwolle

Welcome in Zwolle!

Holland Tour Guides feels at ease in Zwolle and would like to share her enthusiasm with you! This former powerful Hansa town is characterized by the presence of many historic fronts, beautiful town houses, fortifications and canals. Join us and discover the historic city centre and the beautiful monuments, bridges and museums of Zwolle.

Zwolle came into being in the Middle Ages. The origin can be found between the IJssel and the Overijsselse Vecht at the Aa River on a wind-borne sand deposit. This place was logical, since it had a higher location than the very swampy surroundings and because of that it was habitable. The city is named after this place; in that time it was called 'suolle', which was corrupted in Zwolle later on.

By the way, the difference in height between the wind-borne sand deposit and the rest of the area can nowadays still be seen in the city. For example the Sassenstraat has a higher location than the Grote Kerkplein (church square) because of that. You can also observe it in the passage between the Voorstraat and the Melkmarkt; the difference in height had even to be solved by placing steps.

The well preserved old city centre is located inside her canals. Our guide will take you to it and will tell you about the beautiful churches like the basilica of Onze Lieve Vrouwe Tenhemelopneming, a medieval cross church from 1394 at the Ossenmarkt and the well-known Peperbus, a late-gothic tower from 1454 which belongs to the basilica of Onze Lieve Vrouw ten Hemelopneming.

We will also show you the rests of the old city wall, which used to wall the whole city. In this wall no less than 23 towers used to be located! We will take a look at the Sassenpoort (gate); the only gate, of original 6 gates, which has been completely preserved and for that reason is of exceptional (inter)national culture historic importance. Zwolle also has other gateways of which we will observe the rests; the Diezerpoort from 1475 and the Steenpoort, a city gate from 1488.

Zwolle also has 2 old mills, which we can visit in this tour, the Passiebloem, an octagonal oil mill with sheds from 1776 and the wind flourmill Windesheimer from 1747.

Of course we can take you to one of the many museums in Zwolle; the Stedelijk Museum (municipal museum) is definitely worth a visit! The Stedelijk Museum Zwolle focuses on the culture history of Zwolle and the region. Beautiful views from the surroundings of Zwolle, painted by Old Masters can be observed here, but you will also find works of Herman Brood; after all this artist was born in Zwolle!
