A lot of fishing fleets are nowadays in the North seaports, where they fish on open sea. Urk is still one of the most important fishing village in The Netherlands. The fish which is caught is being transport by truck to the fish junction of Urk, where they sort and sell by action. This fish goes for the greater part to the more than 100 companies, which export it again.
Besides the activities in the harbour, ship-building is also important for the people of Urk, both for professional purposes as for pleasure a lot of ships are build, repaired and taken care off. An industry of world fame; ships from Urk sail over the whole world.
We are taking a walk with you through the smaller Urker alleys and show you how the population (same still wear their traditional costumes) lives and lived! Your guide will tell you all about the history of this island, her inhabitants and knows anecdotes!
Off course we can visit the museum of Urk, where we can see the development Urk has made since 1000 years ago. We see a rebuild fishers house, like they were in Urk in the beginning of this century. Also we can admire the different traditional clothes by the centuries gone and there is also a beautiful reconstructed part of a original Urker fishers boat to see.
