Today we’ll be visiting Tilburg, a city with many faces.
It all started with the so-called ‘herdgangen’, triangular-shaped areas which were used for sheep husbandry. One thing led to another and Tilburg became thè woolcenter of province Brabant, and later on even of The Netherlands as a whole. The herdgangen can still be found in Tilburg nowadays. Our guide is happy to lead you through areas as Het Goirke, Hasselt and Korvel.
After the Second World War, Tilburg changed radically. The importance of the textile industry became less and less and Tilburg wanted to manifest itself as a modern industrial city. In 1960, a huge part of the inner centre of the city was destroyed by order of mayor Cees Becht. His nickname from then on was ‘Cees de Sloper’, which means as much as ‘Cees the demolition man’.
But of course there still are many sights left to be seen and Holland Tour Guides is very willing to show them to you! So we will take a trip down memory lane by passing by the old castle of King Willem II and a former textile factory. We will also see remarkable buildings as the Westpoint and the Stadsheer. Naturally, we can’t guide you through Tilburg without showing you the very well known cultural centre 013. And last but not least, our guide knows a lot about the Burgundian lifestyle that the people from Brabant are well known for, so he will happy to show you an authentic bar if you ask him to!
Also, you can visit the Textilemuseum. Various textile factories were situated in this building. What makes this museum extra special, are the still running looms and textile machines inside. Another museum which could be worth a visit is the museum for modern art, the Pond. And yes, for those who suspected it already: you’re right, this building also used to be a textile factory.
Whatever you come for, Tilburg has it.
