Tour Nijmegen

Walk on the Waalside!

Holland Tour Guides will take you to this old, original roman city (2000 years old). Nijmegen is located, for the greater part, on the left bank of the Waal, at the foot of a lateral moraine. This city has a very strategic location, which also was the main reason for the fact that the Romans established themselves here and Nijmegen became the largest city of the then Netherlands during some time.

Join us on this trip through 2000 years of history and ask your guide about the stories; he knows them!

Emperor Karel de Grote made Nijmegen became an Imperial City. But Nijmegen also is a Hansa town, well accessible thanks to her location (Waal) and off course an university town thanks to the presence of the Radboud University. Nijmegen has preserved many memories of her impressive Roman and medieval history.

Holland Tour Guides will take you along different culture historic places of interest. You will pass the Kronenburgerpark, which was sung of in the eighties by the inhabitant of Nijmegen, Frank Boeijen and the Grote- or Sint Stevenskerk (church) from the 7th century.

We will take you to the water at the Waal quay and will also take you along beautiful historic places like the Waag on the Grote Markt and along the medieval buildings in the lower town (at the Lange Hezelstraat). Take a look at the Valkhof with the Barbarossa ruin and the Sint-Nicolaaskapel (chapel). In the Valkhof Museum you will find, amongst others, an important collection of Roman archeology. If you appreciate it, we can also visit it.

We will also visit the more recent buildings, like the impressive concert hall De Vereeniging (1915), designed by architect Oscar Leeuw, located at the Keizer Karelplein (square). You will find various characteristics of Art Nouveau and Art Deco here. Or the, in those days, very futuristic Auto Palace, the petrol station with garage and home which was designed in 1936 by the architects B.J. Meerman and J. van der Pijll. It is considered to be an extremely nice example of the New Objectivity.
