Welcome in Middelburg!
The guides will take you to the capital of Zeeland, the historic Middelburg. Despite of the consequences of the 2nd World War, in which a part of the city was flooded, and the demolition of many old buildings in the fifties and sixties, Middelburg nowadays is the fifth monumental city of The Netherlands, with over 1200 national- and municipal monuments.
Until the end of the 16th century Middelburg was the largest city of northern Holland, but it also played an important part in the VOC. The Chamber of Zeeland was situated in Middelburg and the city was just as important for trade with East India as the other VOC cities: Delft, Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Rotterdam together!
At the quay you can still find numerous monumental town houses with beautiful fronts and several warehouses which remind of that time. These buildings were occupied by merchants and governors of the VOC. Our guide knows the buildings and the stories of their former inhabitants! Amongst others we will show you the accommodation, from 1616, of the supreme crew master of the Chamber Zeeland of the VOC, located on the former shipyard terrain of the VOC. Between 1602 and 1795 over 300 East Indiamen were constructed on this terrain.
Off course we will visit the late-gothic town hall at the Markt from 1458, which is nowadays used as an university building. We will take a look at the old Abbey with the Abdijplein (square), the Koorkerk (church) and the Abdijtoren (tower; the Lange Jan 84 meters high). Nowadays the Zeeuws Museum is established here and you will also find pieces of the former VOC period here.
We will take you along the Nieuwe Kerk (church), in which the marble grave of the Zeeland sea heroes Cornelis and Johan Evertsen is located and along the Oostkerk and the Koepoort (gate). Well-preserved and a guarantee for beautiful stories and anecdotes. Ask our guide about it: he would love to share it with you! He can also tell a lot of stories about the Kloveniersdoelen, the Damplein with the houses 'grote en kleine Christoffel', 'the Posthoorn', the 'Roeybaerse' and the Graanbeurs (grain exchange).
We might have some time to visit Miniatuur (miniature) Walcheren, a park in which striking Buildings from Walcheren have been copied on a scale of 1:20.
