Welcome in Leeuwarden!
The Frisian capital Leeuwarden has as much as 575 state monuments! It is doubtful if we can visit them all during the tour of Holland Tour Guides, but we will certainly visit a number of them! Leeuwarden also has beautiful protected townscapes with canals, fronts, streets and squares.
Discover this beautiful old city centre, the pubs at the Doelensteeg, the jetties along the restored embankments and walk over the old pavement of the Kleine Kerkstraat, with at the end the Oldehove, the tower which the Frisians lovingly call ‘Skeve’ and which is leaning (over 5 degrees).
From the Prins Hendrik Bridge we enjoy the view of the Museum harbor. In this harbor you will find more and more historic boats. On one side the “Bruine Vloot” with amongst others the famous Skûtsjes and on the other side boats which don’t leave the port quite often anymore.
We will show you the Oude Waag, where they used to weigh the merchandise of the boats. Our guide will guide you along the beautiful restored retaining walls with the original planting of the Stadsgracht (city canal) and will tell you about the history of the waterways in the city and the trade which was conducted.
Of course we will also take a look in the Weaze, the red-light district of Leeuwarden and the special dam through which you can pass through in de Weaze, a system which keeps the dirty water of the ‘boezem’ (outlet) outside the clean city canals.
Enjoy this beautiful capital together with Holland Tour Guides and listen to the stories and anecdotes of our Frisian guide.
The people from Leeuwarden say, not without reason: ‘Look, that is the best of Leeuwarden!
