Welcome in Hoorn! If you think of Hoorn, you might also immediately think of the “Scheepjongens van Bontekoe’, the book by Johan Fabricius of which recently a movie has been launched. But this old city at the IJsselmeer (lake) has much more history than just this story (based on the original ship’s log Willem Ysbrantz Bontekoe) !
This old VOC city has saved a lot of her wealthy history. We will take you along the city centre, where you can still taste the atmosphere of the VOC. The city still has many old buildings, quiet alleys and narrow canals and of course the harbor at the IJsselmeer, which at that time was connected, through the Zuyder Zee, with the North Sea and the rest of the world. From this harbor the trade with India was conducted.
What about Hajo, Padde and Rolf? The “Scheepsjongens van Bontekoe”? They still sit on the embankment while they stare over the water, near the Houten Hoofd and the Hoofdtoren…..
