In May 2000, the great fireworks-disaster occurred in Enschede. More than a thousand people were wounded, more than twenty got killed because of an exploding fireworks-factory. Eventually, the city has been able to leave this disaster behind and move forward. At the Deurningerstraat, there’s a memorial called the Herdenkingsplaat. It seems as if Enschede became stronger because of this. The inhabitants of Enschede know how to enjoy themselves, just because they survived such a terrible event.
In this city, you can enjoy a great walk with starting point the Grote Markt. There, you can visit the church called Grote Kerk. From there, there are a lot more possibilities: a few ancient city gates, the city hall that was built in the 1930s, the Alphatoren, the Syrian-orthodox church named after the holy Mor Kuryakos. Take your pick!
