The yearly Airborne Memorial Day in remembrance of the Battle of Arnhem during the Second World War in 1944 with veterans doing parachute jumps and military bands playing. The episode of the famous comic figures Suske and Wiske, in which they visit Ede. The infotainmentcentre Cinemac, build into the sound barrier next to the busy highway A12. The mill Concordia. That’s what’s made Ede known!
Today, we will take a stroll through the city accompanied by our guide. And you could be surprised of all the sights you’ll find here. Did you know about the important role that Ede played during the Second World War? During ‘Operation Market Garden’, the allied soldiers landed with their parachutes on the Ginkelse Heide near Ede, to go and fight the Nazis in Arnhem. That’s why the yearly Memorial Day still plays a very important role here.
Unfortunately, a lot of the allies died in combat. That’s why there are so many memorial sites in the area, of which the Airborne monument at the Ginkelse Heide is one of the most important. But also worth mentioning is the Canadian Sherman tank at the Langeberg! This tank took part in the Britisch Polar Division, who liberated Ede at April 17, 1945. And you know what’s so great? If you join the swim/waterpoloclub in Ede, you will be named a Polar Bear!
