Dordrecht, or Dordt as the inhabitants call it, is situated where river the Merwede branches off into the river the Noord and the beginning of the Oude Maas. The city was founded on the fens and is situated on the island Dordrecht, alongside Dubbeldam and Sliedrecht.
Today you and our guide will take a stroll through the city. He can tell you that there used to be a saying about Dordrecht: ‘Hoe dichter bij Dordt, hoe rotter het wordt’, which means as much as: the closer you get to Dordrecht, the worse it gets. The source of this saying probably lies in the fact that in the old days people had to travel through the water (swamps and rivers) to get to Dordrecht. Because of the laws in those days, the salesmen that wanted to pass by the city had to offer their goods for sale in the city itself. This law was called ‘stapelrecht’. It could take a long time sometimes, and so the perishable goods could go bad – and rot, which means ‘bad’ in Dutch.
But it won’t become ‘rot’ for you today! Cause what do you think of visiting the harbours and the city hall, the Scheffersplein (a central square), the ruins of the Castle Te Merwe, the beautiful statues of the unfortunate Gebroeders De Witt in front of the Central Library en the mill Kyck. And this is only a tiny summary of all the things that Dordrecht has to offer!
