Deventer is situated at the eastern side of the river named the IJssel. It’s an impressive sight when you approach the city by train. Deventer is therefore an attractive city to visit; with De Brink and De Waag from 1524, the historic museum Deventer, the church the Lebuďnuskerk, the Proosdij from 1130; all very impressive attractions to see!
Our guide takes you on a tour through the city, he has picked out the best route for you! Did you know that Deventer is one of the five oldest cities in Holland? Already writings originated in the 9th century show that Deventer was then a spot with seven farms near the harbor. And now it’s up to you to experience what happened in the centuries since then!
Deventer has always been a city where trade led a leading role, as well as a centre for religious reform. Here, all kinds of religious books were printed to be sent out all over the world!
In the beginning of the 19th century the French Lodewijk Napoleon visited Deventer. He tried a piece of the cake at bakery Bussink and liked it so much, that he immediately placed an order. When he forgot to pay, the brave bakers’ wife reminded him of it. He called himself ‘your rabbit’ instead of ‘your king’ (konijn instead of koning), which gave everybody a good laugh of course!
Of course it’s not possible anymore to bump into Lodewijk Napoleon during this tour, but maybe at the end you can try at bakery Bussink if you like their cake as much as he did. Enjoy!
