Welcome in Breda!
Breda is a real cosy exuberant city in Brabant with a wealthy past, of which we will show you some things during this tour. Come along and look around!
You will see the Grote or Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk (church) from far. This church, built in a beautiful Gothic style, dates from the 15th century.
Breda had already been granted privileges in 1252 and because of that, this is one of the oldest cities in North Brabant. The city has a vivid history; it has lived (and has suffered) under/from the regime of the Spaniards. The Watergate the Spanjaardsgat with both defensive towers still reminds of that time.
During the last years, a lot of attention has been paid to the old history of the city; parts of the city wall from the 14th century have been digged up and can partly be seen again. Defensive works from the 16th century have been digged up and mapped.
In the city centre you will find the Castle of Breda, nowadays the Royal Military Academy. This former castle from before 1350 has been rebuilt in the last couple of ages and has been developed into the present condition. Unfortunately this building is not accessible for the public.
Breda also wants to restore the original waterways, canals and avenues. In this way the city tries to restore the old city to its original state. Look around: this is how it used to be! Off course we will also show you the rustic Begijnhof (Beguinage) with her 29 houses, an own chapel and a beautiful herb garden.
There is one monument which makes you recognize Breda from afar: the tower of the beautiful church from the 15th century is a splendid example of Brabant Gothic.
Get surprised by this atmospheric, worth seeing city!
