Welcome in Arnhem!
Arnhem is, after Nijmegen, the 2nd city of Gelderland. Arnhem has been called the ‘Green city at the Rhine’ since the 17th century, also thanks to the 15 parks which nowadays still determine an important part of the townscape. The many brooks and ditches also contribute to this image which we would love to show you during our tour through this city with her eventful history.
Much of this history is still present, despite of the destructions during the Slag om Arnhem (Battle of Arnhem) which was fought around and on the Johan Frostbrug (bridge) in the middle of the city during the 2nd World War.
Arnhem has played an important role in the history of The Netherlands and especially in the history of Gelderland. Arnhem was the capital of the Kwartier van Veluwe (quarter of the Veluwe) in the county Gelre at the Unie van Utrecht (Union of Utrecht). Arhnem was part of the Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden (Republic of the seven United Provinces) and in 1817 Arnhem became the capital of the province of Gelderland in the Verenigd Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (the United Kingdom of The Netherlands).
Our guide will show you the rests of this history and will tell everything about it. You will pass the parks, the Sabelspoort (gate), the Eusebiuskerk (church), the Duivelshuis, the Jansplein (square) and the Korenmarkt.
Optional: If you are interested, we can extend the tour with a visit to the historic basements in the city centre of Arnhem. These basements descend from the Middle Ages and were used for storage of for example wine. They have recently been rediscovered and have partly been restored. They are connected to each other by means of tunnels. The main tunnel has a transparent roof so that you can observe the shopping public (and they can observe you…) from the tunnel.
We can also ‘climb’ the Eusebiuskerk (church), 73 meters with the glass panorama lift. You will have a splendid view of Arnhem and it will immediately become clear why it is called the Green City at the Rhine.
Whatever you want; we tell the stories, you make the tour!
