Welcome in Amersfoort!
Did you know that Amersfoort is the real centre of The Netherlands? The exact centre of the Onze Lieve Vrouwentoren, lovingly called ‘Lange Jan’ by the people from Amersfoort (it is one of the highest towers of The Netherlands) is the point from which The Netherlands have been determined cadastrally.
Amersfoort is known for her traveled stones, the Amersfoort Kei. Actually, this traveled stone hasn’t, like ‘real’ traveled stones during the ice age, drifted to its place. The fact that this large stone of 7157 kg, 2 meters high and a circumference of 5,25 meters ended up in Amersfoort, is the result of a bet of Esquire Everard Meyster in 1661. 400 inhabitants of Amersfoort have pulled the stone from the Leusderhei to the Varkensmarkt and have been rewarded for it by the Esquire with beer and cracknels.
By the way, beer has always played a role in Amersfoort, the city has been (since the 14th century) a city filled with many breweries. Due to a change of taste and due to the competition the last original brewery was closed about 30 years ago. Many old buildings which are linked to the beer history of Amersfoort, are still present and will be visited during the tour.
We will also take you along the water- and land gate De Koppelpoort and the Hofje (almshouse) van Poth; one of the oldest almshouses of the Netherlands. We will also pass the rests of the neoclassicist Elleboogkerk (church) which was mainly destroyed during a fire at the end of October 2007; the Armonda exhibition, also held in the church, was unfortunately also destroyed.
