Welcome in Alkmaar!
Alkmaar: some people think of it as a nice provincial town between the meadows and the polders, but there is much more for the connoisseur! We will make sure that you will become a connoisseur!
If you approach the city via the A9 from the southwest, the brand-new DSB-stadium of professional soccer club AZ coached by Louis van Gaal will welcome you.
We drive along, park our bus and get off. Alkmaar, under 95.0000 inhabitants (1st January 2007) not really a metropolis, has an age-old city centre with many old brick streets, shops and terraces. The city had already been granted privileges in the 13th century.
Alkmaar is known for her weekly cheese market, which has been held for ages according to the same traditions on the Waagplein from April until the beginning of September. Unique in the world, very busy and great to experience (for both young and old people).
Around the Waagplein with the old Waagbuilding you will find the city centre with her narrow canals, alleys and streets. You will find age-old houses, squares and bridges here. Did you know that one of the first Albert Heijn supermarkets was grounded in Alkmaar? You can still recognize the building, since the name Albert Heijn is still on the front!
There is enough to see in Alkmaar, the city has as much as 400 monuments. During the guided tour your guide will take you along the windmill of Piet from 1769 at the old avenue, the Fish market from the 16th century with her stone fish stalls, the many age-old small estate and canals, your guide knows the details and the anecdotes. The stories about the red-light district of Alkmaar and her inhabitants, located at the Achterdam, will certainly amuse you.
