Another great city with a typical atmosphere, an atmosphere which you can only experience in Enschede! But Enschede is also the city that has suffered severely in 2000 when a fireworks-factory exploded; destroying many houses and killing 23 of its inhabitants.
‘Eanske’ – the way the name of the city is pronounced by the people in the area – is situated in the East of the Netherlands. It was founded in the Middle Ages, when farmers settled themselves around a castle. It’s situated at the border, which in old-Dutch meant: ‘An die Schede’. Therefore the city got it’s name: Enschede.
With the Grote Kerk (the church) at the Oude Markt as a starting point, we will start our gastronomic tour! We’ll stop at several especially selected restaurants to taste delicious food. During the walk from one restaurant to the other, we will pass by several attractions.
We will not only try to give you an idea of the historical past of this city in the Middle Ages, but also of the impact the fireworks-disaster has had on the city. You will learn all about how this terrible explosion occurred and we will visit the memorial-site at the Deurningerstraat; the Herdenkingsplaat.
Enschede is a remarkable and characteristic city, with very brave residents who will give you a warm welcome!
