Say, where do you start when you talk about the Blauwvingers/Bluefingers (inhabitants of Zwolle)?
Not only blue, but also fast fingers. A lot has been achieved here!
Zwolle used to be a walled city with 23 towers! One can still admire some remnants and a few gates such as the Sassenpoort gate. At the Ossen market is the Basilica of Our Lady of Assumption, a medieval church in crucifix shape dating from 1394. Fifty years later, the famous Peperbus was added, a late Gothic tower.
Did you know that at carnival time Zwolle is called Sassendonk? The Blauwvingers (the Blue fingers) dress the most upbeat of all carnival celebrators. The farmer keel has for many years already given way to the self made fantasy costume.
Zwolle is known as the greenest town in the Netherlands, because of the great number of beautiful parks, which are ecologically maintained. Hence, not only blue fingers but also green fingers!
Don’t get a fright when you walk around the centre of Zwolle. It is crowded out with cows. A number of artists have created 30 life-sized cows! They won’t run away, but you will! You’ll stroll happily through the city with your group of colleagues, family or friends and will enjoy all the attractions. In between we’ll take a break in an eatery or restaurant for a delicious entrée, main dish or dessert. And, do check your fingers at the end of the evening. Who knows, you might have become so enthusiastic about Zwolle that they have turned blue!
