In order to remove all misunderstandings: No, we are not going to the house of Jan Smit.
It is obvious that the success of this palingsound (eal sounding) known singer from the stable of Votown has increased even more the number of visitors to this touristy village. There is more to be found in Volendam than well-known Dutchmen and their music.
For instance, Vollendam has a very Catholic community where faith has in the past years undergone a strong revival. There is an annual carnival that lasts four days and attracts people from throughout The Netherlands. You can enjoy walking in the Harbour or on the Dike, visit the diamond polishing work and take a look at St. Vincent Church. And for those who can't forego it ...there is also the Palingsoundmuseum (eal sound museum)!
The history of Vollendam is actually quite casual. We won’t forget so quickly the event that took place at New Years eve in 2000/2001. A fierce fire started after a bunch of Christmas stars were lit in the pub 'De Hemel'; the fire did not last very long.
Whether it is music, nice fish, faith, or ... a tragic event, you will hear all about it in Vollendam during a very special Walking Dinner evening on the IJsselmeer!
