Let’s dig... Do you know what a ‘terp’ is? Nothing complicated really, it is just a small sand dune where you would go and live on top in order not to get wet feet. Leeuwarden originated from these small sand dunes.
A lot has happened since the first small sand dune and now! We will pilot you through these ... from small sand dune to sushi!
There have been many other Frisian rebellions, infighting between farmers, pirates, people and rural inhabitants. When Leeuwarden received its city charter in the fifteenth century, the quarrels between the Vetkopers and Schieringers shot up. Fortifications were built. The Duke Albrecht of Saxony eventually succeeded in subjugating the much-developed city. When Wijerd Jelckama, the rebel leader was beheaded in 1523, everyone knew that an era had ended.
Leeuwarden was among the ten most distinguished cities in the Netherlands. The building where justice was pronounced, the Chancellery, is a good example of this. De Waag of course, the Court Stadhouderlijk and last but not least: the leaning tower Oldehove!
Go and view and admire them all during a walking dinner in Leeuwarden. That means eating and viewing, and eating again always at a different location! And now we hear you thinking: why has no one thought of this before? Perhaps because in recent years many top restaurants have opened their doors in the heart of Leeuwarden. Consider for example the sushi restaurant in the TV series My Tent is top!
