The inhabitants of Hoorn do not stand still! This is the city with the greatest number of city walks on offer. You can make courtyard walks, walk a route along religious icons, a muted canal walk, a harbour walk, a monastery walk and so on. All this is fantastic save that these walks invariably focus on one aspect of the diverse trading-company town.
What we will do with our culinary and cultural historic walk, one would say fits better with Hoorn’s character. We do not just concentrate on the long and turbulent history that the moved(!) Town has, but will also look at the dozens of monuments, churches, towers, courtyards and statues that makes up Horn’s treasures.
It is thanks to its participation in the United East India Company in the 16th and 17th centuries, that the town flourished. A serious set back occurred in the eighteenth century when the ships transited to Amsterdam, where they could be repaired. French troops then occupied the city, the town hall was demolished and the city lost her city functions as regional capital city. In short, a great disaster! The city regained fortunately her economic balance back by trading in cattle and agrarian products such as cheese.
