The name Hengelo (the city next to Almelo in Overijssel province) means a thicket on a slope. That sounds quite simple but the development has not stood still: Hengelo is, in the 21st century, quite a town with an interesting mix of old and new.
The centre of the city was completed destroyed by bombardments during the second world war. Reason: a high concentration of factories supplying the technical industry. These are therefore no longer there, but the roman Catholic Sint-Lambertus basilica from 1890 was fortunately spared! While the striking white town hall has given way to a remarkable modern design. The towers appear to have their origin in Siena and Florence in Italy!
Does the term ‘The Flying Dutchman’ mean something to you? The Fanny Blankers-Koen Games are held every year in Hengelo. This tournament is named after this particular ‘mama’ who won four gold medals at the Olympic Games in 1948.
Hengelo, a diverse, interesting city with a mix of then and now. The ideal place to be spoiled with a mixture of good food, culture and history. See you soon in Hengelo!
