Assen started with a convent, but Assen is all but god-fearing! This will become clear during a delicious dinner that will be eaten in different restaurants. In between we will be acquainted with this northern city while walking through the centre!
It only became an attractive place for rich people to live there in the eighteenth century. Lodewijk Napoleon Bonaparte chose Assen as a summer residence. He was at the time the monarch of the Kingdom of Holland. Assen became a city in 1809, a few years later the capital city of the Drenthe province.
The centre of Assen must be specifically mentioned. Many different architectural periods are to be found there, flung together. We will off course look at the statue of Bartje and the monument in front of the TT that is performed here every year. Assen houses a number of beautiful monuments such as the Palace of Justice, the Drent’s Archives and the Drent’s museum.
Many well-known Dutch people live in Assen such as Levi Weemoedt, author and poet and Olga Zuiderbroek, the actress. The 2009 Tour of Spain started in Assen! In brief, it is a world city with a rich history. Anything but religious...
As you walk over the Brink or the Koopmansplein it will slowly dawn on you that: here life is good. Whether it is the breath of the bygone kingdom of France, the motor events, the magnificent building where the Drent’s museum is housed, we don’t know precisely why, but Assen is definitely well worth a visit!
