The statue of rock ‘n roll-artist and painter Herman Brood, church-tower the Peperbus, the Diezenpoort and the Steenpoort, the Pelserbrugje and the basilica Onze Lieve Vrouwe Terhemelopening; everything in Zwolle has its own story and history. Zwolle is a big city situated at the IJssel, which has almost 120.000 inhabitants! But be careful, the choice for this Walking Brunch is at your own risk!
Well, you could say that all ingredients are present to make this afternoon a huge success! We’ll stroll through the inner city, in search of the best stories, sights and buildings. In the mean time, we’ll brunch. Up to three times we’ll sit down and have something to eat and drink. But hey, we need a lot of energy to deal with this robust city!
That’s because there used to be a lot of battles going on in Zwolle. Not only during the Spanish occupation, but also during World War II. A lot of people were executed then. Almost 500 Jews were taken away to concentration camps in those days too. And also, in the days before that, in the Middle Ages, there was a lot of fighting going on too. In that era, the cities of Kampen en Zwolle fought each other. The ‘Kamperteuren’ and ‘Blauwvingers’ robbed each other en beat each other up for no reason.
So, be careful! Or might Zwolle be fed up of all this fighting in the last centuries? Let’s find out! See you in Zwolle!
