A few facts in advance: Volendam is situated next to Edam, at the IJsselmeer and is known because of its unique traditional costumes and fishing boats. Also, a lot of nationally famous singers live in this village. You can even find a museum over there, the Palingsoundmuseum, where you can learn all about the singers of Volendam.
But there’s much more to see and do in Volendam! During our tour through the centre (and across the dike by the IJsselmeer), we will stop to have a drink and a bite to eat. Walking and brunching in Volendam is a pleasure for all your senses!
And then, there was this terrible New Year’s Eve in 2000, where a bunch of fire-stars lit up the decorations on the ceiling of the very crowded pub the Hemeltje. Fourteen young people lost their lives because of this disaster. We’ll pay attention to this terrible happening during our tour too.
Volendam is a special, obstinate and tough village at the water. A visit is very worthwhile!
