Prepare yourself for a tough afternoon, with a touch of sailor-attitude! Middelburg is situated on the peninsula Walcheren in the province of Zeeland. Still, there are pieces left of the old system of defence against the Vikings. Historians don’t agree though; some of them think the old bridge was built by Viking king Harald himself, when he ‘borrowed’ Walcheren in 1841 from emperor Lotharius.
Middelburg was one of the most important cities during the times of the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC). Only Amsterdam had more importance in those days. Sailors had their influence on the inhabitants of Middelburg, and because of that, the city has developed a bit of a foreign ambience. You can decide for yourself if you think the food also has a foreign taste, since we’ll be having brunch here. As much as three times we’ll stop during our tour to sit down and have a delicious meal, after which we’ll be continuing our tour.
Just to see tower the Lange Jan and the beautiful building Kloveniersdoelen would be worth the visit, but also the late-Gothic city hall at the Markt is very impressive. In the front, statues are built of all the counts and countesses that ruled the province of Zeeland.
In short: let’s get surprised and, who knows, you might feel like a real sailor or Viking today!
