Hengelo is one of the three major cities in the province of Overijssel. Because a lot of industry was situated in Hengelo, the city was repeatedly bombed during World War II. In 1944, the whole centre of the city was destroyed.
We can almost hear you think.... ‘Nice’.
But, let’s talk about the Electro Radio Nostalgie Museum, a historic museum for the radiofreaks amongst us, or the impressive concert hall Poppodium Metropool, the Fanny Blankers-Koen stadium (named after the Dutch Olympic champion of 1948) and the 71 monuments that can be found in Hengelo.

Did you know that Hengelo has its own beer since 2007? It already existed before, but brewer Stella Artois stopped producing it in the 1980s. We can assure you that drinking this beer while eating one of the specialities of Hengelo is a great combination...
Here, the Second World War is almost forgotten, thanks to all of these great initiatives. At the moment the municipality is working on the project Hart van Zuid (Hart of the Souh), a huge reconstruction of the city centre, next to the railway station. Hengelo keeps on developing itself! Chances are that you’re really looking forward to visit this city right now!
