‘Aenske’, the city at the border (which used to be called ‘an die schede’ which is old Dutch for ‘at the border’ and when pronounced sounds like Enschede), has been destroyed several times already! Three fires; one in the 16th, one in the 18th and the last one in the 19th century and a bombing during World War II have left their marks. Did you know that the allied soldiers thought they were bombing a German city? The bombing was a mistake!
But it won’t be a mistake when you take up the Walking Brunch in Enschede. This tough city, which has been partly destroyed again in 2000 when a fireworks-factory exploded, will surprise you in a pleasant way! We’ll visit special sights and enjoy great food and drinks in the mean time, when we have our brunch courses in different restaurants in the city. Walking, learning about history, eating, drinking: all in one afternoon!
By the way, speaking of World War II again: did you know that more than half of the Jewish population of Enschede survived the war? Compared to the rest of the country, that’s twice as much! This was all possible because of a smart Jewish engineer called Menko, who worked out a way to prevent Jews to register. You can ask your guide all about it.
A very brave city indeed!
As you will understand, all these radical events in the history of Enschede have left their characteristic markings in the city’s appearance and ambience. This will definitely not be a dull afternoon!
