Did you know that there are also cities named Dordrecht in South-Africa and Suriname? The Dutch Dordrecht and the city in South-Africa are so-called partner cities.
It won’t get more international than this! This afternoon, we’ll be heading the road with a guide, right through the city centre of Dordrecht. Please take your umbrella!
Dordrecht is a special city, which played a very important role in trade during the Middle Ages. You will still see signs of it while walking in the centre. We’ll visit the Groothoofdspoort (‘Big Head’s gate), the first city gate, we’ll walk by historic merchant houses en we will take a look at the inner harbours. Of course we will also visit the Grote Kerk (Big Church). But not before we’ve had our delicious first round of brunch on this very special brunch afternoon!
But, please restrain yourself a little bit, since we’ll be enjoying brunch courses like this up to three times! In between the courses, we will walk from one sight to the other. Dordrecht houses the impressive number of 891 monuments!
By the way, did you know that the inhabitants of Dordrecht are also called Schapekoppen? (Sheep’s heads). This originates from the Middle Ages, when for every piece of cattle, the farmers had to pay toll. Some smart traders put some clothes on their sheep, to try and mislead the watchmen by the gate. But, of course, the sheep started to bleat and the watchmen discovered their deceit.
You’d better put your scarf around your neck and keep your umbrella ready, because the weather in Dordrecht can be bad! And who knows.... you might bump into a sheep wearing clothes!
