Apeldoorn is Orange! When you book a Walking Brunch in Apeldoorn, you can be assured that the tour will be characterised by the Dutch monarchy: the House of Orange-Nassau. We’ll be walking towards Paleis Het Loo and church the Grote Kerk, as well as taking a stroll through the Parkenbuurt with its old mansions, decorated with ornaments. We’ll take our first brunch-bite to eat in the Oranjerie, perhaps preceded by drinking an oranjebitter? (a liqueur in honour of the House of Orange).
In general, happiness surrounds the members of the Dutch monarchy. For example, the Dutch people all have a day off each year at the 30th of April to celebrate the birthday of the (former) queen: Koninginnedag. The whole country celebrates this out on the streets with parties, flee markets etc. That’s why the shock was tremendous when during the celebrations in Apeldoorn in 2009, where the royal family was present, a man in a car drove his car right through the crowd and killed eight people. The royal family witnessed it all from their tour bus. Of course, we will take a moment in our tour to remember this disaster. Apeldoorn has 130 monuments, one of them has been made especially in remembrance of this horrible day.
